Immigrant Children’s Assistance Project (ICAP) Attorney

ProBAR seeks to hire an Immigrant Children’s Assistance Project (ICAP) Attorney to provide immigration counseling and representation to both detained and non-detained unaccompanied minors in South Texas. This position is based in Harlingen, Texas and will begin in September of 2008.

Description of ProBAR:
ProBAR’s mission is to provide high quality pro bono representation to indigent immigrants and asylum seekers in South Texas. ProBAR, established in 1989, is a joint project of the ABA, the State Bar of Texas, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). The ICAP Attorney will work to maintain and expand ProBAR’s work on behalf of unaccompanied immigrant children, which is funded by the Texas Bar Foundation, Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), and AILA. In South Texas, ORR detains more unaccompanied minors than in any other area of the United States. Children who are detained in this region come mainly from Central America. Over the years, ProBAR has developed innovative legal theories for children applying for asylum and other forms of relief.

The Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area ("AABA") is offering one or more grants to help fund qualified summer law clerk(s) to work on legal projects that provides free legal services to the Asian-American community. Applicants must be sponsored by a non-profit legal organization that has agreed to supervise the applicant. The grant will be funded by the AABA Law Foundation through the Community Services Committee of AABA.Interested applicants should meet the following requirements:1. Have a summer position with a non-profit legal service organization;2. Will work on a project(s) which will provide legal assistance to the Asian American community;3. Commit to at least 10 weeks of work on the project(s) this summer.

The procedures for submitting an application for the AABA Summer Grant are as follows:

1. Submit a 1-2 page grant proposal, including:

(a) Your name, address, phone number and e-mail address;
(b) A description of the type of work that will be done under the grant;
(c) A description of your qualifications;

MS. JD Summer 2008 Scholarship

Working in public interest this summer without sufficient funding? Ms. JD is awarding two $500 scholarships to female law students entering their second or third year at an accredited U.S. law school and working the summer of 2008 at least 35 hours per week for a minimum of 8 weeks at a government agency or nonprofit organization. Unpaid judicial externs also qualify.

This year's essay topic asks applicants to discuss myths about being a law student. Did you experience any pleasant surprises upon starting your study of law? Did you learn any law school 'lessons' the hard way? Ms. JD wants to hear about them. Applications are due no later than June 1. Recipients will be notified no later than June 15.

Program Details

In addition to working on specific research projects, interns are exposed to other important intellectual and career development opportunities. All interns participate in a Sacramento orientation, including a tour of the state capitol and an introduction to California state policy by our government affairs staff. PPIC also provides training for each intern with the Institute of Governmental Sciences library at the University of California, Berkeley, which allows access to many important databases, journals, and statistical datasets.

Throughout their stay at PPIC, summer interns have the opportunity to meet with researchers to discuss careers in policy research and with communications staff to learn about outreach activities. Interns may also join research associates at their regular meetings and are invited to attend PPIC events, including our public affairs programs and research briefings.

The summer intern program is structured to include an orientation meeting, as well as opportunities for evaluation and feedback at the midpoint and the end of the program. In addition, all interns give an institute-wide briefing about their summer projects.

Qualifications

In selecting interns we look for a demonstrated interest in public policy research, with coursework or work experience that is relevant to one of this year's projects.

PPIC values the wide variety of backgrounds and experiences of our research staff. Key elements in the consideration of qualified candidates include excellence; diversity of talents, backgrounds, and viewpoints; and a strong fit with our mission and goals.

Position Details

Summer internships are located in PPIC's San Francisco office. Compensation will be $16 per hour. Internships last up to three months, ideally beginning June 2, 2008.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. The principal object of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of all minority group citizens. As part of
its mission, the NAACP seeks to enforce federal, state, and local laws securing civil rights and to educate persons about their constitutional rights.

Throughout its history, the NAACP has provided attorneys the opportunity to make significant, historic contributions to the field of civil rights law. Past NAACP attorneys include, Charles Hamilton Houston, Thurgood Marshall, Constance Baker-Motely, Robert Carter and Nathaniel Jones. The NAACP hopes to inspire attorneys to enter the field of civil rights law and to provide broad exposure to various strategies utilized by grass roots civil rights organizations.

The NAACP Law Fellow Program is designed to give students who have completed at least one year of law school the opportunity to work for the summer at the NAACP Headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. Those selected for the program will:

* Work with civil rights attorneys on relevant issues concerning criminal justice, education, housing, voting rights and environmental justice;
* Read and prepare a research paper regarding strategies to advance the civil rights struggle;
* Attend the NAACP National Convention and Continuing Legal Education Seminar;
* Examine and evaluate citizen complaints of civil rights violations;
* Increase opportunities for minority lawyers to obtain judicial clerkships;
* Interact with civil rights leaders and attorney advocates;
* Review and obtain approval for direct action.

Law Fellows will be selected based on a number of factors including: recommendations; interest in civil rights law; and academic performance. Selected participants will be awarded a stipend of $------5,000 to offset living and travel expenses while participating in the program.
Fellows will be responsible for securing their own housing and transportation for the duration of the program. Fellows may also seek funding from outside sources to supplement the stipend. Based on funding, an additional fellowship opportunity may become available for a
law school graduate to work with the NAACP Legal Department.

Santa Clara County Counsel's Affirmative Litigation and Social Justice Section Summer Externship

The Affirmative Litigation and Social Justice Section of the Santa Clara County Counsel’s office is accepting applications for its Summer 2008 Honors Externship Program.

The Section brings impact litigation, drafts legislation and develops novel programs to ensure social and economic justice for county residents and to advance local, state and national public policy reform. Examples of the Section’s current cases include: suing lead paint manufacturers for abatement of the property damage resulting from lead paint in private and public buildings; challenging the State of California’s practice of terminating Medi-Cal eligibility when youth are incarcerated and failing to reinstate eligibility immediately when they are released; and seeking a writ of mandate requiring the Board of Equalization to tax “alcopops” – alcoholic energy drinks popular among young drinkers – at the higher rate applicable to spirits rather than at the lower rate applicable to beer.

Honors Program externs will work principally on developing new public policy impact litigation. As an integral part of the Affirmative Litigation and Social Justice Section, Honors Program externs will conduct factual investigations, develop litigation, do legal research, assist in drafting complaints and participate in ongoing litigation. Honors Program externships are available to second- and third-year students seeking to obtain law school credit or wishing to volunteer.

Law Students for Reproductive Justice's Internship Opportunity in the Philippines

We have had one of our four summer international internship placements fall through and are hoping that there is a perfect law student fit still searching for a summer job.

Each summer LSRJ places matched interns with NGO's in developing countries to work on projects related to reproductive justice. Though most of our placements have been booked for some time, due to circumstances beyond our control we are currently looking for a fulltime summer intern to join EnGendeRights, an NGO located in Manila, Philippines, in order to help them with two key tasks over the summer. The intern will do research, interviews and writing for a shadow CEDAW report -- an important piece of work that will influence international opinion on the commitment of the Philippines government to ending discrimination against women. The intern will also likely help give trainings on LGBT rights, including reproductive rights.

Equal Justice America is pleased to offer fellowships of up to $4,000 to students at the law schools listed below who work full-time during Summer 2008 for organizations providing direct civil legal assistance for the poor.

Equal Justice Works Katrina Initiative

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita physically devastated the Gulf Coast region and disrupted the lives of hundreds of thousands of families and individuals in some of the poorest communities in the nation. In the aftermath, there is an unprecedented need for legal assistance, exacerbated by the fact that the Gulf Coast region has the lowest level of funding for legal aid programs in the country.

Equal Justice Works has obtained a $1 million matching grant from the JEHT Foundation to sponsor public interest attorneys to work in the Gulf Coast region for up to two years, providing direct legal services to Gulf Coast residents in need and generating pro bono opportunities for lawyers and law students.

Beyond meeting immediate, hurricane-related legal needs, the Equal Justice Works Katrina Initiative will foster the development of long-term pro bono and legal aid infrastructures.

The Katrina Legal Fellowships Program

Through the Katrina Initiative, Equal Justice Works established the Katrina Legal Fellowships Program to send nine experienced public interest lawyers to the Gulf Coast region for up to two years. This new Fellowships program has placed lawyers at organizations located in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas to provide emergency legal assistance for hurricane survivors, promote short- and long-term stabilization and community rebuilding efforts.

The Katrina Pro Bono Legal Corps Program

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, Equal Justice Works expanded its Pro Bono Legal Corps program , sending 10 Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Attorneys to the hardest-hit areas in the Gulf Coast region. These attorneys have been placed at organizations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to help the hundreds of thousands of people left without homes, jobs and social services due to the damage from the hurricane.

Katrina Summer Corps

Equal Justice Works is committed to setting aside 65 Summer Corps slots for law students who are providing disaster-related legal services in the Gulf Coast region. Students are eligible for these slots if the primary purpose of their internships is to assist hurricane Survivors or evacuees in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi or Texas.

Equal Justice Works Summer Corps

In 2007, 347 Summer Corps members performed 119,824 hours of service at 233 nonprofit public interest organizations across the country. The 2007 Summer Corps directly assisted 15,360 individuals and families in need of legal assistance.
General Information

The Equal Justice Works Summer Corps program enages law students around the country who are expanding the delivery of legal services to those who need it most. Summer Corps is an AmeriCorps-funded program that in 2008 will provide 350 law students with the opportunity to earn a $1,000 education award voucher for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization. Summer Corps members provide critically needed legal assistance in low-income and underserved communities in the United States on a broad range of issue areas.

In 2006, in response to the devastation caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Equal Justice Works dedicated 65 Summer Corps slots to form the Katrina Summer Corps. Katrina Summer Corps members dedicated their summer to assist hurricane survivors and evacuees in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. In 2007, 34 Katrina Summer Corps members provided services to more than 1,200 survivors of the hurricanes. Due to our long-standing commitment to legal justice in the region, Equal Justice Works continues to encourage students to develop projects that focus on needs related to the Gulf Coast disasters of 2005.
Member Benefits

As a Summer Corps member, you will:

* Serve a minimum of 300 hours at a nonprofit public interest organization of your choosing;
* Earn a $1,000 AmeriCorps education award voucher upon completion of 300 hours of service that can be used to pay current educational expenses or qualified student loans;
* Gain first-hand experience and legal skills in areas such as client intake, representation and legal research and writing; and
* Become an official member of AmeriCorps, one of the largest national service networks in U.S. history.

SUNDAY EVENTS
Our Annual Board Meeting will take place Sunday, October 5. All LatCrit community members are invited to attend the open session starting at 10:30 a.m after the board meeting and hear about our exciting portfolio of projects, followed by a community luncheon with the board from Noon to 2:00 p.m.

CONFERENCE THEME
A classic response to strivings for social justice, and a traditional antidote to subordination and political oppression, is reliance on the republican mode of government. In its purest form, this type of representational system promises that each individual, and each community organized around familiar identity markers or by shared interest, will have equal opportunity to advocate for their well being and equal access to the channels for expression of political choice. However, the republican form of government may also present a siren song, attracting adherents to embrace a model which inherently tends toward replicating and reinforcing essentializing hierarchical social structures. The promise of social and political equality seemingly offered by this model of ultimate popular authority can easily be thwarted without respect for certain external or transcendent principles. Without centering itself on egalitarianism and critical anti-subordination activism through interrogation of sociopolitical processes, republican government too often devolves into a tyranny of the majority that is then sustained by regressive restriction on electoral participation.

How is it that so many political communities around the world continue to fail in the effort to guarantee true political inclusion and to disrupt manifest patterns of subordination for all members? Is the premise that republicanism, or even liberal democracy in general, can ensure individual freedom fallacious, or have we yet to overcome the hurdles of human selfishness that stand in the way? What explains this failure, and what are the specific obstacles we must clear? What pathways to change remain open, and how can coalition building be refocused on consensus for systemic change as well as substantive change through existing systems? In a survey of our current world situation, the case for change is clearly made.

Indeed, republican political models are universally vulnerable to majoritarianism, even when they aspire to advancement of traditionally subordinated interests. Dislodging embedded power differentials requires more than nominal guarantees of electoral access, and relies on actual and robust participation by all stake-holders at the political bargaining table, and yet this is precisely what we do not presently enjoy on a global scale. Electoral systems, domestic and international, are fraught with uncertainty and allegations of fraud. Political systems are manipulated by militarized juntas, entrenched oligarchies, and even pseudo-monarchical political families, with the result that essentialized and intersectional “others” are consistently and increasingly disenfranchised.

Such failures to include crucial constituencies, and to balance competing needs and interests, are destructive of the social condition generally, and raises particularly troubling issues in a wide variety of areas, ranging from racial and gender equality and class-based subordination to local, national and global governance. LatCrit XIII offers an opportunity to explore how the tension between representation and subordination plays out in different settings, and how the practice of silencing and exclusion has gone hand-in-hand with a professed commitment to equal access to political decision-making through representation. We seek to illuminate the processes by which socio-legal equality and transparency in government, which are pre-conditions for effective democratic representation, are forced to yield to hierarchies, subordinations, and disenfranchisement. The gender, class and race-based qualifications of yesterday, the spectacle of hanging chads in Florida, the debacle involving faulty voting machines in Ohio and elsewhere, the international insistence on “correct” electoral results in Gaza, the Russian oligarch/intelligence complex’s engineering of the elections to the Duma, the influence of entrenched family “vote-banks” in the global south, and the resurgence of xenophobic majoritarianism in Europe and the US, are but examples of the same foundational problem, namely, the disconnect between the promise of democratic representation and the actual operations of power.

LatCrit XIII, to be held in Seattle in 2008, presents the perfect place in space and time to consider the implications of these converging political crises—the issues of who speaks for whom, by what process the spokespersons are selected, and how these processes do or do not reinforce subordination. As we head into the 2008 election, and simultaneously move into a new era of sensitivity to the vulnerability of democratic systems, we seek to inquire into the limits of republican virtue and representational practice, the blind spots in liberal democratic theory, and the elusive balance between respecting an individual’s right to political power and protecting individuals from the marginalizing effects of the exercise of political power.

As this will be the first LatCrit Conference held in Seattle, we also invite you to address questions that have particular salience for this city and region. Some examples might include: climate change/environmental balance, and the dominant position humans have assumed with respect to the living ecosphere; the continuing challenges faced by domestic First Nations and the vitality of tribal political and social culture; the place of fish, and salmon in particular, in our area’s history, mythology, and current social context; the influence of the Pacific Rim on domestic situations; and the many ways in which bio- and other technological innovations can disrupt or/and contribute to systems of exclusion and patterns of subordination. LatCrit’s shifting area focus ensures that the geographic rotation of the conference helps to illuminate local and regional issues, and helps us incrementally to show and understand how local particularities produce inter/national patterns of privilege and subordination

Everyone is encouraged to use these guideposts to draft a proposal, and then to submit a Program Proposal Proposal through our online process at the LatCrit website no later than March 14, 2008.

STANDING LATCRIT CONFERENCE THEMES
Every year, LatCrit conferences also seek to feature and balance four basic perspectives in organizing the substantive program. These four perspectives are listed as themes below. They have, thus far, served as useful lenses of LatCritical inquiry, enabling LatCrit scholars to develop an impressive body of work that is increasingly linking issues of identity to the substantive analysis of law, policy and process. This effort to link identity issues to substantive analyses has been particularly fruitful in revealing the way race and ethnicity are implicated precisely in those areas of law and policy that are ordinarily thought not to be about race and ethnicity: for example, in the operations and assumptions of international law and legal process, foreign affairs, liberal democracy, religion and sexuality, to name just a few areas of recent LatCrit attention.

To build on these accomplishments, everyone is encouraged to develop their proposals with a view to: (1) expanding our understanding of the impact of race and ethnicity in substantive areas of law and policy ordinarily thought to be about “something other than race” (e.g. issues of sovereignty, labor rights, globalization, intellectual property, antitrust law); and (2) deepening our analysis of the various ways in which identity issues intersect, conflate and conflict in our self-understandings and coalitional efforts. The following four themes are offered, therefore, as possible points of reference for thinking in new ways about familiar issues (like affirmative action and bilingual education), as well as for encouraging critical forays into new substantive areas (like communications or antitrust laws):

1) Papers or panels that focus on the multidimensionality of Latina/o identity and its relationship to current legal, political and cultural regimes or practices. The ideal is to explicate aspects of the Latina/o experience in legal discourse, both domestically and internationally. Nonetheless, you are free to address identity issues that do not specifically touch upon Latina/o identity or the law.

2) Papers or panels especially salient to this region (the Northwest). Regional emphasis ensures that the Conference’s geographic rotation will illuminate local issues, helping us understand how local particularities produce (inter)national patterns of privilege and subordination.

3) Papers or panels that elucidate cross-group histories or experiences with law and power, such as those based on the intersections of class, gender, race, sexuality and religion. In this way, each Conference aims to both elucidate intra-Latina/o diversities and contextualize Latina/o experience within inter-group frameworks and Euro-Heteropatriarchy. Accordingly, we constantly ask how we can create progressive movements, communities and coalitions that meaningfully recognize difference.

4) Papers or and panels that connect or contrast LatCrit theory to other genres of scholarship, both within and beyond law and legal theory, including but not limited to the various strands of critical outsider jurisprudence (critical race theory, feminist legal theory, queer legal theory) that critique class, gender, race, sexuality and other categories of social-legal identities and relations.

As in past years, the conference site is designed to be accessible, comfortable, self-contained and affordable in order to promote both formal and informal interaction, and to foster a relaxed community ambiance even as we engage in our serious work. This year, we will be staying at the Silver Cloud Hotel—Broadway, located across the street from Seattle University and just 3 blocks into that campus to the law school where many of the conference events will take place. Because of the immediate proximity, we will not be providing organized transportation to the law school. The hotel is a 180-room modern facility with a fitness center and complimentary wired and wireless high speed internet in the guest rooms. We will send the hotel contact information to you, together with the conference registration materials, in the spring, so that everyone can make their hotel reservations directly at the same time you register for the conference. As usual, child care services will be facilitated, and partners and family members are warmly welcome to join us.

International Travel Grant

Each year the UC Davis Internship & Career Center offers international travel grants to undergraduate and graduate students. Last year over 25 grants were awarded. Grant amounts will be between $250 and $1,000.

The application process requires a personal statement, resume, transcript, one letter of recommendation and a photocopy of your passport.

Selected applicants will be interviewed and will need to provide a list of 3-5 references during the interview. Interviews will be held in late April or early May. Recipients will be notified by May 12, 2008.

For the past seven or eight years, the UC Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education has conducted a successful paid summer internship program placing approximately 20 UC students in positions with unions or community-based organizations focused on labor issues. Undergraduate and graduate students from all Northern California UC campuses are eligible to apply. The program has two tracks: an organizing track where students are placed in projects where they would learn organizing skills and a research track where projects sharpen students' research skills. A number of students are asked by their sponsor organizations to continue the working relationship past the duration of the internship. The deadline for applications is March 14th.

Any help you can provide in getting the word out to undergraduate and graduate students at UC Davis would be of great service. Several former interns report that they first heard about the program through you.

Richard M. Frank Environmental Law Writing Prize

Submission deadline: Friday, April 18, 2008

The Richard M. Frank Environmental Law Writing Prize will be awarded this spring. The competition is open to all students enrolled at the UC Davis School of Law. The winner will receive a cash prize of $400, and his or her name will be engraved on a plaque to be displayed at the law school.

Papers may be on any topic related to environmental, land use, or natural resources law or policy. Papers must be individually authored. They must not have been previously published or committed for publication. UC Davis environmental law faculty will judge the competition. The prize will be awarded for the paper which makes the most significant scholarly contribution, taking into consideration factors including: originality of thought, importance and difficulty of the topic, depth of research, and quality of writing and analysis. The winning paper will be published in Environs.

Submission requirements: Papers must be double-spaced, single-sided, in 12-point font on letter-size paper. They may be of any length. Citations should conform to the current edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation. Attach a cover page with the title, author’s name, expected graduation date, contact information (mailing address, e-mail, and phone number), and the words “Frank Prize Submission” at the top. The paper following the title page must not identify the author in any way, but must begin with the title. Papers must be submitted in hard copy to Environs (place them in the Environs mailbox outside the Dean’s office) no later than 5 p.m. on April 18, 2008. The Richard M. Frank Prize honors the contributions of Richard M. (Rick) Frank, ‘74, to environmental law practice and education. Following positions as a staff attorney with the Federal Energy Administration in Washington, D.C., and the California Energy Commission, Mr. Frank joined the California Department of Justice in 1977. For approximately 25 years, he specialized in environmental and land use litigation, representing the State of California, its agencies and officials. He rose to the position of Chief Deputy Attorney General for Legal Affairs, in which capacity he oversaw all civil and criminal litigation handled by the Department of Justice on behalf of California state government and the people of the State of California, in both state and federal courts, and supervised a staff of approximately 1100 attorneys and a comparable number of paralegals, investigators and other legal support staff. In 2006, Mr. Frank left the Department of Justice to assume his current position as the first Executive Director of the California Center for Environmental Policy at Boalt Hall School of Law (UC Berkeley). He has taught courses in environmental law at Boalt Hall, UC Davis, and Lincoln Law School in Sacramento. He has written and lectured extensively on a wide array of environmental, land use, natural resource and constitutional issues.

Williams Institute Gleason/Kettel Summer Law Fellowship

Tom Steel Post-Graduate Fellowship

The Tom Steel Post-Graduate Fellowship is to fund a new lawyer each
year to work in the United States on an innovative, public interest
law project that serves the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered
community. The Fellowship will help ensure that unmet legal needs are
recognized and prioritized on an on-going basis, and that the next
generation of legal advocates for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgendered community develops the critical skills necessary to
secure civil rights into the future.

The Steel Fellowship is the first fellowship of its kind anywhere in
the country. This will be an $25,000-$35,000 award, offered each year,
for an individual to complete full-time work for twelve (12) months.

Pride Law Fund seeks to fund "cutting edge" projects with the
potential to make a lasting impact. Persons are eligible to apply if
they are law students eligible to graduate in the Spring semester, or
are lawyers within three years of their graduation from law school.
Additional requirements are set forth in the application materials.
Factors considered in awarding grants include:

Need for the project (how under-served the issue/community is)
Anticipated impact of the project
The organization and structure of the proposal
Stability and supportiveness of the sponsoring organization or attorney
The applicant's past community or public service activities

The Roberta Achtenberg, Steven Block and Mary Morgan Fellowship Programs are open to law students working under the supervision of an attorney at a 501(c)(3) tax exempt non-profit organization anywhere in the country. Enrollment in law school is not required for the Steven Richter Fellowship. The Achtenberg, Block and Morgan Fellowships are funded in part through the generous support of the Bay Area Lawyers
for Individual Freedom.

The MLGBA will be awarding the Gray Scholarship in the amount of $1000 to one law student for the 08-09 academic year to defray the costs associated with law school. The award will go to a law student who demonstrates a commitment to and involvement in the LGBT community, leadership, maturity and responsibility. To apply for and be eligible for the Gray Scholarship, candidates must be enrolled at a law school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and must complete the application form along with all required submissions (including one letter of recommendation from a person not related to the candidate). Thomas F. Black, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Rhode Island Bar Foundation will make two awards of $15,000 each to prospective first year law students for the 2008-09 academic year. The scholarship is a one year, non-renewable award for full-time students who are Rhode Island residents entering their first year of law school in September 2008. Each Scholarship award will be made on the basis of demonstrated financial need, superior academic performance, community and public service, and demonstrated contacts with and commitment to the State of Rhode Island. The Scholarship Committee seeks applications from candidates without regard to race, color, religion, country of ancestral origin, handicap, age, sex, or sexual orientation.

ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund

The ABA Scholarship Fund is intended to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to the scholarship recipients. The Scholarship Fund will award $5000 of financial assistance annually to each recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first year student may be renewable for two additional years, although the recipient will have to re-apply each year and the renewal will be based upon satisfactory performance in school, eligibility and available funding.

Recipients will be selected based on their qualifications for the scholarships including that they are a member of a racial and/or ethnic minority that has been underrepresented in the legal profession; the applicant's financial need; personal, family and educational background; personal statement and participation in community service activities. At the time of application submission, the applicant must have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at his/her undergraduate institution. The applicant must also be a citizen or permanent resident of the US.

National Federation for the Blind 2008 Scholarships

The National Federation for the Blind is offering scholarships ranging from $3000 to $12000 for students who are legally blind. Requirements for these scholarships include that you must be a pursuing or planning to pursue a full time course of study in the 2008 academic year (one scholarship may be awarded to a student employed full time while attending school part time) and recipients must participate in the entire NFB convention and all scheduled scholarship program activities. All scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence, community service and financial need. All documention must be received by March 31, 2008; winners will be notified by June 1.

Hudson County Bar Foundation Scholarship Fund

The WLS Scholarship

WLS awarded the first WLS Scholarship in 1966, when it awarded $250 to Barbara McCallum. Ms. McCallum was a student at McGeorge School of Law who later served as president of WLS. The WLS Scholarship is awarded to a financially needy first or second year law student whose achievements are consistent with WLS's goals of advancing the position of women in law and society, but who may not meet the criteria applicable for WLS's other scholarships.

Women Lawyers of Sacramento's The Virginia S. Mueller Scholarship

In 1997, WLS established a scholarship in honor of Virginia S. Mueller, a trail-blazing Sacramento lawyer who has worked tirelessly to advance the position of women in the legal profession. This scholarship is available to third year (fourth year evening) students studying for the bar examination. Virginia Mueller has practiced law for over half a century, having become a member of the California Bar upon graduation from Cornell University Law School in 1946. In 1959, she was hired as the first woman Deputy in the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. She was hired, District Attorney John Price recalls, in spite of her gender; she simply was clearly the most qualified candidate. Virginia Mueller was a founding member of WLS and served as its second president. Through her leadership positions in WLS, the National Asociation of Women Lawyers and many other organizations, Virginia Mueller has vigorously worked to end all forms of discrimination against women. Women Lawyers of Sacramento's The Francis Newell Carr Scholarship

In 1992, WLS established a scholarship in honor of Justice Frances Newell Carr. The daughter of migrant farm workers, Frances Carr often switched schools and quickly learned to take advantage of whatever educational opportunities were available. Naturally competitive, she learned to cut more grapes than anyone else by the time she was ten years old. She decided to become a lawyer because "all the important men were always lawyers." She worked her way through college and law school, graduating from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1948. She and another woman classmate had difficulty finding employment until they found a lawyer who offered to let them both work full-time for a single $200 a month salary. Frances Carr was a founding member and the first president of WLS. In 1975, she became the first woman appointed to the Sacramento County Superior Court. Five years later, she was elevated to the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, where she served until her death in 1991. The Frances Newell Carr Scholarship is awarded to a financially needy first or second year law student with an outstanding academic record. Special consideration is given to candidates who have overcome personal adversity.

Rosenthal Bar Exam Scholarship for Public Interest

The Rosenthal Bar Exam Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding graduating California law students with financial need who are embarking on careers in public service law by providing financial support for costs related to taking the California Bar Exam. Winners will receive California Bar/Bri Law Review Bar Exam review courses and/or $1,000 in cash to help defray fees and related expenses of taking the California Bar Exam.

The Scholarship is named in honor of Imelda Rosenthal, who emigrated from Guatemala to the United States in the 1960s. Upon arrival, she learned the language and customs of her new country while preparing to join the workforce. Soon, Imelda was running a successful housekeeping and cosmetics company. Reflecting upon her early days in America, Imelda began using a portion of her business' profits to help other young immigrants find employment. Imelda worked with young people by helping them select the appropriate clothes and makeup and honing their communication skills for job interviews. She was highly regarded for her tireless commitment to helping others find and adapt to their new homeland.

In 1986, at the age of 42, Imelda passed away from cancer-related illness. To honor her memory, her family established a memorial fund, which led to the creation of the Foundation's Rosenthal Bar Exam Scholarship Program to carry on her work and inspire others to emulate her passion for giving back to the community.

Rosenthal Scholarships are typically awarded in the spring of each year.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate and document an orientation toward public service. The candidate must produce a minimum of three references supporting his/her past experience in public service work. Women and ethnic minority students are especially encouraged to apply. The candidate must also maintain at least a 2.5 GPA, be certified by the institution of maintaining good ethical standing, have financial need, and are required to attend (at their own expense) a reception in their honor on a date and at a location to be announced. Failure to attend or to provide a valid reason for absence could result in forfeiture of the scholarship. The Foundation will award scholarships each year in amounts ranging from $2,500 to $7,500.

Applications are available in March. Each School of Law may only nominate up to five candidates. Application deadline is July.
